Dogs will learn to associate different tones of voice with different situations; therefore commands should be given in a short, crisp voice. Short commands are preferred. Praise should be given in a soft tone-maybe even whisper-so that the dog can differentiate the command from the praise. Use the same commands over and over during training. The command "no" should be given in a commanding, sharp tone of voice.
I have found personally that "The Gentle Leader" -a head halter- worked best for trying to teach Laila not to pull. Head halters are the best way to stop a persistant puller. Most dogs will resist it but will adapt quickly as they come to associate it with treats and walks. Head halters should not be used on puppies-only strong and determined adult pullers! Once the dog learns that the halter remains loose if he or she doesn't pull then they will walk at your side instead of walking ahead and causing the halter to become tight.
This has definately helped me with stopping Laila from pulling me around the neighborhood.
